Algebra I

This course is designed to teach topics covered in high school Algebra 1. The purpose is for students to be familiar with these topics before they start the high school course.
Students will take 4 math courses in high school. The usual math schedule for high school students that intend to go to college is as follows: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus (which includes Trigonometry).
Depending on their grades (they must maintain a B average), their attendance, and the policy of the high school they attend (some high schools require students to take a placement test to receive credit), students may have an opportunity to skip the Algebra 1 course in high school allowing them to take a college level math course such as AP Statistics or AP Calculus in 12th grade. Students will still need to take 4 math courses in high school.
Prerequisite skills for this course include a thorough knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and order of operations with positive and negative fractions and decimals. Students should be familiar with simplifying expressions, solving multistep equations, solving proportions, scientific notation, graphing, and solving percent problems. These topics will be extended in this course.
Students will have frequent homework in this class and must complete it on time. We will move quickly in this course and I do not want students to fall behind.
In Algebra we will cover relations and functions, solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations and inequalities, polynomials, quadratic equations, and we will use TI 84 calculators to evaluate, make tables, graph, and calculate equations for lines of best fit.
